HC Deb 29 June 1911 vol 27 cc566-7
Mr. WHELER

asked whether any householder who lets lodgings, while in receipt of sickness benefits under the National Insurance Bill, can claim any exemption from payment of his rent under Clause 51 of the Bill while receiving rent for such lodgings?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

The protection from distraint or ejectment given by Clause 51 is not withheld from a sick person who lets lodgings. The hon. Member is no doubt aware that, in order to guard against possible abuse of this privilege, I have promised to propose an Amendment applying as from the commencement of the period of immunity the condition that the case must be one where distraint or ejectment would endanger life.

Mr. WHELER

There will be cases where a householder will be free from paying rent and will receive rent from lodgers?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

There is no cause for anyone to pay rent. That is a complete misconception of the clause.
