Mr. HOBHOUSE

Mr. WILKIE

asked the Secretary to the Treasury whether, in view of the promotion of several Excise assistants to second-class officers at a time when assistants of Customs of longer service were employed on Excise duties, thereby rendering such promotions possible without materially increasing the staff, he will give an assurance that the seniority of Customs assistants will receive due consideration on the merging of the two staffs?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

I regret to be unable to make any statement in anticipation of the issue of the Report of the Customs and Excise Amalgamation Committee.
