HC Deb 17 July 1911 vol 28 cc667-8
Sir WILLIAM BYLES

asked the Home Secretary if he will state how many times and on what occasions since 1905 have the military forces of the Crown been lent to the civil authorities to aid the police in repressing disorder?

Mr. CHURCHILL

I can only answer this question as regards England and Wales. Troops were applied for by the mayor of Winchester in November, 1908, but were at once withdrawn when it was found that the disorder was of a trifling character; troops were supplied in aid of the civil power in Glamorganshire in November last, and at Salford during the present month.
