HC Deb 12 July 1911 vol 28 cc357-8
Mr. POINTER

asked whether men who were taken on three months ago at the new factory, Portsmouth Dockyard, at a promise of five months' employment, are now being discharged owing to the work having been completed earlier through the adoption of the premium bonus system and double shifts; and, if so, whether work will be found for the men at least for the period promised?

Mr. McKENNA

The men in question were informed when engaged that their employment would be temporary, but no promise was made as to the time the employment would last beyond an assurance of three months. The men are now being discharged because the work for which they were engaged has been completed, but that event has not occurred earlier than was anticipated.
