HC Deb 21 February 1911 vol 21 c1723
Mr. CROFT

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will state the highest and lowest average price of wheat in Great Britain during the years 1900–10, and the highest and lowest average price of the quartern loaf of bread?

Mr. BUXTON

In the period 1900–10 the average "Gazette" price of British wheat was lowest in 1901 and 1903, when it was 26s. 9d. per quarter, and highest in 1909, namely, 36s. 11d. The average price of bread throughout all places in Great Britain is not available, but in London the mean price of household bread was lowest in 1901, namely, 5d. per 4 lb., and highest in 1909, when it was 5.9d.

Mr. CROFT

May I ask whether his information now does not dispose of any question of a duty of 2s. per quarter on foreign wheat?
