HC Deb 21 February 1911 vol 21 c1726
Dr. ADDISON

asked whether the mail-cart drivers employed by contractors were required to use safety straps; what was the cost of a safety strap; and whether Messrs. McNamara, of Castle Street, Finsbury, paid for the straps used by their drivers or required their drivers to pay for them themselves?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

The contractors for London Mail Cart Services require their drivers to use safety straps, the cost of which ranges from 1s. to 3s. 6d. The drivers employed by Messrs. McNamara and Co. have to provide these straps at their own expense, and I am informed that this is the general custom of the trade, the straps being regarded as part of the drivers' personal equipment.
