HC Deb 13 February 1911 vol 21 cc684-5
Mr. WILLIAM THORNE

asked whether it is the intention of the Government to take steps to prevent the overcrowding of the trains of the Metropolitan District Railway which takes place every morning and evening between Aldgate East and East Ham?

Mr. BUXTON

It is no doubt difficult to prevent some overcrowding of trains, however frequent the service, at busy times in the morning and evening. I have, however, forwarded a copy of my hon. Friend's question to the London, Tilbury, and Southend and Metropolitan District Railway Companies for their observations, and I will acquaint him with the result.

Mr. W. THORNE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there are only twenty-four seats in each of the carriages, and there are between sixty and seventy straps, a fact which shows recognition by the Board of Trade of the practice of strap hanging, and whether it is not the fact that at least 200 people ride in these carriages, and that faintings are common every morning?

Mr. BUXTON

If the hon. Gentleman can give me any information as to the facts I should be only too glad to inquire into the matter. In his question he does not give me any particulars, and I sent it to the company for their report.

Mr. W. THORNE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that, in consequence of the growing population between Barking and Aldgate East eventually something will have to be done in this direction, and I want to know if any of his inspectors have reported to the right hon. Gentleman this overcrowding?

Mr. SPEAKER

The hon. Gentleman must give notice of that question.
