HC Deb 07 August 1911 vol 29 cc789-90
Mr. SHEEHY

asked whether the Leonard estate, Warrenstown, county Meath, had been purchased by the Estates Commissioners, or were they in negotiation for the purchase of the estate; and whether any tenants were being excluded from purchase, and, if so, on what grounds?

The ATTORNEY-GENERAL for IRELAND (Mr. Redmond Barry)

The estate of Annette M. Leonard, county Meath, which includes lands at Warrenstown, was sold by the owner direct to the tenants under the Irish Land Act, 1903. Sixteen of the seventeen tenants have purchased their holdings and the lands have been vested in them. The Estates Commissioners understand that the landlord has purchased the interest of the tenant in the holding not included in the sale.

Mr. LUNDON

asked whether, now that the Estates Commissioners had arranged to resell to Colonel Maxwell Lowe, under Section 3 of the 1903 Act, that portion of his estate at Sunville, Ardpatrick, county Limerick, they had made any provisions in the way of compensation or reinstatement for Mrs. Ellen Ryan, who was evicted off these lands in the year 1888?

Mr. REDMOND BARRY

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply to his similar question on 3rd August.

Mr. LUNDON

asked whether the estate of Lord Massey, at Glen of Aherlow, county Tipperary, had yet been inspected; if so, whether the farm of William Hanly, Ballygeana, Galbally, had been included in the farms inspected, and, in view of the rent being paid by Hanly and his refusal to purchase at the price given by the other tenants, whose land was much cheaper, would steps be taken by the Commissioners to prevent this man from being compelled to pay a price which he would afterwards be unable to meet; and whether, before the sale was completed, the Commissioners would bring about a settlement between this man and the landlord?

Mr. REDMOND BARRY

The Estates Commissioners are unable to identify any estate of Lord Massey in county Tipperary as the subject of direct sale proceedings before them under the Land Purchase Acts, nor can they identify the case of William Hanly, Ballygeana, as being included in Lord Massey's estate in county Limerick, to which the hon. Member may refer.
