HC Deb 11 April 1911 vol 24 cc213-4
Mr. KEIR HARDIE

asked what punishment was meted out to the guard of the East India Railway, who, at Bakhtiarpur station, insulted Mr. Hassan Imam, an Indian gentleman, and referred to in a question answered by the Hon. Sir T. R. Wynne, in the Viceroy's Council, on the 7th March?

Mr. MONTAGU

Sir Thomas Wynne stated in the Viceroy's Council that the Agent of the Railway has dealt with the matter, and that steps have been taken to prevent a recurrence of such an incident. The Secretary of State has not been informed of the nature of the punishment, and does not consider it necessary to ask for further information.

Mr. KEIR HARDIE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether his attention had been drawn to the assault committed in a first-class compartment in a railway train between Bakhtiarpur and Mokamah on March 4th by a junior engineer in the service of the East India Railway Company on the servant of the Honourable Khan Bahadur Sarteraz Hussain, an orderly of the Legislative Department of the Bengal Government; whether the servant, whilst looking after his master's luggage, was thrust from the carriage while the train was in motion, and had to cling to a bar outside the carriage for three-quarters of an hour; whether the sub-inspector at Mokamah had the servant put under arrest for having complained about the assault; and whether he could say what action had been taken in the matter?

Mr. MONTAGU

The Secretary of State has no information as to the alleged assault. He will cause inquiries to be made.
