HC Deb 05 April 1911 vol 23 c2190
Mr. O'DONNELL

asked the Secretary to the Treasury whether grants for public education have grown in the case of England from £10,212,810 in 1902–3 to £14,375,442 in 1911–12, or an increase of 41 per cent.; in the case of Scotland from £1,405,963 in 1902 to £2,336,594 in 1911–12, or an increase of 66 per cent; in the case of Ireland from £1,333,277 in 1903 to £1,653,324 in 1911–12, or an increase of only 24 per cent.; whether a considerable portion of the increase in the cases of England and Scotland is due to the grants given to secondary education, which in Ireland gets no grant from the Treasury; and whether, under those circumstances he would consider the advisability of a grant for secondary education in Ireland similar to that given in Scotland?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

The figures quoted by the hon. Member are correct. In reply to the rest of his question, I would refer to my reply to his question of yesterday's date.
