HC Deb 05 April 1911 vol 23 cc2195-6
Mr. LANSBURY

asked what is the total number of men registered by distress committees since the opening of registers in October last, and up to 31st March, in the county of London; how many of the men registered received work; the average duration of such work; and what steps it is proposed to take for dealing with the number of men still unable to obtain work?

Mr. BURNS

I am informed by the Central (Unemployed) Body for London that the total number of men registered between the dates referred to was 24,249, and that 3,890 were provided with work for an average period of over eight weeks. As regards the last part of the question, I am informed by the Central Body that, except for special colony cases and for emigration purposes, the registers were closed on 4th March.

Mr. LANSBURY

Can the right hon. Gentleman make inquiries as to whether the infant and child mortality that has been going on for the past two or three weeks has arisen almost entirely in those districts where unemployment most prevails?

Mr. BURNS

I shall be pleased to have from the hon. Member the name of any district in which he would like me to make inquiry.
