§ Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND(Department of Oversea Trade)There are at present no vacancies in the General Consular Service, and therefore further applications cannot at present be entertained. There are still a very few in the Levant and Far Eastern services for which candidates between the ages of twenty-one and twenty-five are being considered by the Selection Committee. A few more vacancies will be available in the general Consular service if and when the re organisation scheme comes into being.
34. Mr. PENNEFATHERasked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will state the total number of officers now employed in the Consular service; and how many of them are whole-time salaried officials?
§ Sir A. STEEL-MAITLANDThe number of regular salaried Consular posts is 352. There are in addition about 120 temporary salaried posts which have been created to deal with circumstances arising out of the War. There are also 540 un-salaried Consular officers.
