HC Deb 29 March 1910 vol 15 c1160
Mr. BRIDGEMAN

asked the Prime Minister if he is aware that the majority of Members of the House of Commons are in favour of an Amendment of the Small Holdings Act of 1908 which will secure adequate compensation to farmers evicted from their holdings to make way for small holders, and whether he will give facilities for the passage of a Bill at the earliest possible moment in this Session for the-amendment of that Act?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Asquith)

I am taking steps to ascertain, through the usual channels, whether the legislation to which the hon. Member refers could be regarded as non-contentious.

Sir RANDOLF BAKER

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman whether he will make such legislation retrospective?

Lord HUGH CECIL

Are we to understand that it is the intention of the Government not to bring in any contentious legislation during he present year?

The PRIME MINISTER

I must refer the Noble Lord to my previous statement.
