HC Deb 16 March 1910 vol 15 c358
Mr. LONSDALE

asked what was the authorised establishment of the Royal Irish Constabulary on 1st January, 1906, and 1st January, 1910, respectively.

Mr. BIRRELL

On 1st January, 1906, the authorised force was 9,500 sergeants and constables. On 1st January, 1910, it was 10,250.

Mr. LONSDALE

Would the right hon. Gentleman explain how it is with such a large force of constabulary so many outrages are allowed?

Mr. BIRRELL

The Irish Constabulary, be they large or small, do the best they can to obtain what evidence they can, and they can do no more.

Mr. REMNANT

May I ask whether the Irish Police are to get a day's rest in seven?

Mr. BIRRELL

The Irish Police are not dissatisfied with the very suitable and ample arrangements which are made to secure them a reasonable amount of rest every week.

Mr. MacVEAGH

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that most of the Irish Police have seven days' rest in the week?
