HC Deb 15 March 1910 vol 15 cc192-3
Mr. HUDSON

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty if he is aware that the Sussex Portland Cement Company, New-haven, contractors for His Majesty's Devonport Dockyard, and who are supplying cement to the contractors for the new lock at Portsmouth, are not observing the Fair Wages Clause of the House of Commons, the pay to their employés being only 4d. per hour without extra payment for overtime and Sunday work; whether the rate per hour paid by other employers in the district is 5d. to 6d. per hour; and what steps, if any, he proposes to lake in the matter?

The FIRST LORD of the ADMIRALTY (Mr. McKenna)

Inquiries have been made and it has been ascertained that some of the men concerned are paid at 4d. an hour and that this is below the rate current in the district. A further communication will be sent to the firm at once, and I will inform the hon. Member of the issue in due course.
