HC Deb 14 March 1910 vol 15 cc6-7
Mr. WEDGWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the Six Great Powers, on handing over Thessaly to Greece, stipulated for the preservation of the then existing landlord system; and whether, in view of the present political situation in that country, he would intimate to the Greek Government that, so for as His Majesty's Government was concerned, no objection would be raised to any action the Greeks might take to emancipate themselves and destroy the landlord system?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

The Treaty of 24th May, 1881, contained certain stipulations intended to secure the rights of the owners of land in the territory which was transferred to the Greek Kingdom by that instrument. No request has been received from the Greek Government to be relieved from the obligations imposed on them in this matter by the Treaty of 1881; nor could His Majesty's Government take any decision as to such a request, if received, without previously consulting with the other Signatory Powers.
