HC Deb 14 March 1910 vol 15 cc18-9
Mr. WEDGWOOD

asked when the first cadets under the new scheme of training will commence their sea service; whether they, or any of them, will serve in the engine-room; and whether they will in that case be under the orders of the first engineer?

Mr. McKENNA

The first cadets were under the new scheme of training commenced their sea service in May, 1908. All of them serve in the engine-room; while in the engine-room they are under the orders of the senior engineer officer. The first officers qualified as lieutenant (E) will go to sea in 1915.

Mr. WEDGWOOD

Will any of these sub-lieutenants, under the new scheme, go to sea earlier than 1915 for their course before they specialise?

Mr. McKENNA

Yes, they will be qualified as lieutenants in 1915. The new scheme entrants will go to sea as sub-lieutenants before that time.

Mr. WEDGWOOD

Whom will they be under in the engine-room as sub-lieutenants?

Mr. McKENNA

Just as they are now.

Mr. GIBSON BOWLES

Do I understand that first lieutenants under the new scheme will go to sea for the first time in 1915?

Mr. McKENNA

They will go to sea as lieutenants in 1915. They are, as midshipmen, at sea now.
