HC Deb 08 March 1910 vol 14 cc1300-1
Sir JOHN DEWAR

asked the Lord Advocate if he had received a complaint that during the last three weeks several trawlers had been working close in shore at the islands of Barra, Bruernish, Eoligary, and Ereskey, on the principal bait ground of the local fishermen; that the only cruiser used to patrol the west coast was seldom or never seen in that district; and what he proposed to do to protect the local fishermen from ruin by the illegal operations of trawlers?

The LORD ADVOCATE (Mr. Ure)

The Secretary for Scotland has received and has inquired into the complaint referred to by the hon. Baronet. He is informed that the fishery cruiser has recently been frequently on duty off the Barra coast, by night as well as by day, and he is assured that every endeavour is made by the Fishery Board to detect and to prevent illegal trawling.
