HC Deb 29 June 1910 vol 18 c921
Lord CHARLES BERESFORD

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty if he would state the cost of educating a naval cadet under the new system from the time of joining until he received his commission as a sub-lieutenant, and the cost of educating a naval cadet under the old system from the time of joining until he received his commission as a sub-lieutenant?

The FIRST LORD of the ADMIRALTY (Mr. McKenna)

The estimated net cost to the State of educating a naval cadet under the new system is £755. In this calculation allowance has been made for annual depreciation of capital outlay on buildings. The estimated net cost to the State of educating a naval cadet under the old system is £385. No allowance for depreciation has been made in this case for the hulks "Britannia" and "Hindustan" and the buildings in connection therewith.

Lord CHARLES BERESFORD

Does that include the cost of instruction on seagoing cruisers?

Mr. McKENNA

I understand it includes the whole expense of the training.
