HC Deb 20 June 1910 vol 18 c25
Mr. LLEWELYN WILLIAMS

asked the Postmaster-General whether he was aware that there existed a demand that postmasters in Welsh towns and villages should be acquainted with the Welsh language; and whether, in making such appointments in future, he was prepared in the public interest to comply with the wishes of the people of Wales in this regard?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

I am aware that such a demand exists. It is already the practice to appoint postmasters with a knowledge of the Welsh language in towns and villages in Wales where that language is commonly spoken. In the case of the more important offices the field of selection would be unduly limited if knowledge of Welsh were insisted upon as an indispensable qualification in addition to the many other qualifications required.
