Mr. CATHCART WASONasked the Under-Secretary for the Colonies if his attention had been directed to the statements of English emigrants deported from Canada; and if he will consider the advisability of legislation with the object of making societies or persons who induce British subjects to emigrate responsible for their admission into British Dominions?
§ Colonel SEELYThe statements referred to have received my attention, but I do not think legislation on the lines suggested would be practicable.
Mr. CATHCART WASONWere no steps taken to bring under the notice of these societies and of the railway companies the terms on which emigrants are allowed to enter Canada?
§ Colonel SEELYYes. Steps are taken and every effort is made to prevent these hard cases arising, but in the cases to which reference has been made there was an alteration made and the notice was not sufficient to enable the railway companies and the emigration societies to take steps which I think they otherwise would have taken. The whole matter is under consideration.
