HC Deb 20 July 1910 vol 19 cc1229-30
Mr. G. J. SANDYS

asked the Under-Secretary for the Colonies whether the recommendations of the conference, held in Melbourne, in December, upon the establishment of wireless telegraphy between Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands have been adopted by the Governments concerned?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Colonel Seely)

I understand that the Australian and New Zealand Governments have taken steps to establish high-power stations at Sydney and Doubtless Bay, but it has not yet been possible to carry out the recommendations of the conference with regard to the Pacific Islands.

Mr. SANDYS

Has the right hon. Gentleman any information as to when this work is likely to be completed?

Colonel SEELY

In Australia and New Zealand the Government have already taken steps to establish high-power stations. Of course, we expect to hear when the work is completed or is nearing completion; but the time has not yet come for making a statement on the matter.

Mr. GIBSON BOWLES

In view of the very great importance of the increase of wireless stations in that hemisphere will the Government do their best to establish there as many stations as they can?

Colonel SEELY

I could not give a pledge as to that. Of course, the establishment of such stations, if this system is extending, would be of great value; but I could not make a statement on the subject now.
