HC Deb 14 July 1910 vol 19 cc595-6
Mr. CLYNES

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he is aware of the demand for a secondary school for boys in Southport and of the disadvantage felt by working-class families through the absence of such a school; and whether he can take some early step to establish one?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of EDUCATION (Mr. Trevelyan)

The provision of a public secondary school for boys in Southport is a matter which the Board have been pressing on the education authority for some years, but so far without success. As the hon. Member is aware, the Board have no power to force local authorities to make provision of this kind, and the Matter rests finally with the authorities themselves and with the ratepayers whom they represent. The Board are continuing to urge upon the authority in this case the desirability of establishing a secondary school for boys.
