HC Deb 12 July 1910 vol 19 cc183-4
Mr. WHELER

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether his attention has been called to the eau of John Wright, A.B., invalided from His Majesty's ship "Prince George" on 5th May, 1910; whether he is aware that John Wright, as the result of an injury to his head, caused by the breaking of a wire rope, was lying in an insensible condition in hospital for a period of seven weeks; and whether he will state if the pension of 6½d. per day which John Wright has been informed that he will receive constitutes the entire pension to which he is entitled to, and why no portion of the pension money has yet been paid?

Mr. McKENNA

This man was not admitted to hospital as the result of an accident, nor is there any record of his ever having received an injury of the character suggested. He was in hospital for fifty-one days prior to invaliding, suffering from disease of the brain (disseminated sclerosis). The medical reports show that this condition was not due to the service, and the pension of 6½d. a day for twenty-four months is the maximum allowable under the Regulations from Navy Votes. The question of granting supplementary assistance from the charitable funds of Greenwich Hospital is, however, under consideration. No payment has yet been made, as the man is stated to be incapable of managing his own affairs, but steps are being taken to issue the pension to his mother on his behalf.
