HC Deb 12 July 1910 vol 19 c183
Mr. WILLIAM THORNE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty if his attention has been called to the fact that Scotch steel makers are unable to cope with the demand for steel plates used for shipbuilding, and that Glasgow shipbuilding firms have placed orders with German makers; if he can state whether any of the German plates are to be used for the building of ships for the British Navy; and, if so, whether he is satisfied that the German plates are of the same quality as those supplied by British firms?

Mr. McKENNA

The demands for steel plates for Admiralty shipbuilding work have been very well met by the Scotch steel makers, who have, up to the present, supplied for such purpose, only British made plates. There is no indication at the present moment that they will be unable to continue to do so. Admiralty specifications stipulate for the exclusive use of plates made from British steel. I am unable to speak as to the use of plates for non-Admiralty purposes.

Mr. JAMES HOPE

If the right hon. Gentleman finds that the Scotch steel makers cannot satisfy his demands will he try the Sheffield makers who can?

Mr. McKENNA

Certainly.
