HC Deb 11 July 1910 vol 19 cc21-2
Mr. GODFREY LOCKER-LAMPSON

asked whether, in the revision of the existing system of judges' circuits, it is proposed to remove the assizes for both criminal and civil business from Salisbury and Devizes to Winchester?

Mr. CHURCHILL

May I refer the hon. Member to the statement which the Solicitor-General recently made to the House that the Government are considering various plans suggested for the rearrangement of the circuit system, but no decision has yet been arrived at. Opportunity will be given for discussion in the House of any proposed alteration of assizes.

An HON. MEMBER

Does the right hon. Gentleman intend to act on the advice and knowledge of the local authority in this matter?

Mr. CHURCHILL

I think I would rather have notice of that question.

Mr. MARKHAM

Is not the administration of justice altogether to be put before the opinion of these small places?

Mr. CHURCHILL

I am afraid I cannot place their relative importance.
