HC Deb 11 July 1910 vol 19 c37
Mr. HUGH BARRIE

asked whether the Agricultural Department are premeditating any further expenditure on the agricultural college at Athenry, and, if so, how much; how many policemen are engaged on special duty in protecting this college; and is the cost borne by the local authority, or is any portion of it paid by the Department?

Mr. BIRRELL

As the Vice-President stated in reply to a question asked by the hon. Member for Central Bradford on 30th July last, the Department have decided not to proceed with the building of a college at Athenry. The agricultural station and a farm in that district belonging to the Department are protected by sixteen police, of whom eleven belong to the free force and five are extra police. Half the cost of the extra police is charged to the county, and no part is paid by the Department.
