HC Deb 24 February 1910 vol 14 cc329-30
Mr. KERR-SMILEY

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, whether he was aware of the insufficiency of harbour accommodation at Portandoo, Portrush; if he had received complaints of the losses which the local fishermen suffered in consequence; and whether the Government would take immediate steps to remedy the grievance by carrying out the necessary improvements?

The CHIEF SECRETARY for IRELAND (Mr. Birrell)

Representations as to the insufficiency of the accommodation afforded by the Harbour at Portandoo have been made to the Department of Agriculture and Technical Instruction for Ireland, who are at present in communication with the Antrim County Council in regard to proposals for various marine works in the county. Whether improvements can be carried out at Portandoo will depend on the amount the county council are prepared to expend on such works, and any representations on the subject should in the first instance be addressed to the county council.

Mr. MOORE

How much is the Department going to contribute to this work?

Mr. BIRRELL

It depends on what is contributed by the County Council.

Mr. MOORE

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware the Department undertook to carry this work out four years ago?
