§ Mr. WEDGWOODasked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether one Kishen Singh has been charged at Lahore with having sold a pamphlet containing two chapters of Seeley's Expansion of England, on the ground that it is seditious; and, if so, whether he has yet been found guilty, and what sentence has been inflicted?
§ Mr. REESBefore the hon. Gentleman answers that question, may I ask is there any reason to suppose that any court in India has sentenced any person for publishing extracts from English classics?
§ The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Montagu)I think the answer I am about to give will cover that question. Kishen Singh was charged with being concerned in the publication of ten different pamphlets of a seditious nature. The Secretary of State has no information as to whether any of them contained any quotation from the "Expansion of England." The Government of India have not yet reported the result of the trial.
