HC Deb 19 April 1910 vol 16 cc1862-3
Mr. WING

asked the Secretary for War if he will take into consideration the advisability of further varying the dietary of the Army by placing fish among the fixed foods arranged in the daily dietary, in harmony with the proposal made by circular from the Fisheries Protection Society, and, if not, will he explain why?

Mr. HALDANE

Various proposals for the inclusion of fish in the soldiers' dietary have been fully considered, including that of the National Sea Fisheries Protection Association. Trials have been made, but with unfavourable results. Further, it would appear from the reports on the subject that the soldier is averse to fish of any description as a general article of dietary. It is not therefore considered advisable to adopt fish as part of the dietary.

Mr. WING

Will the right hon. Gentleman seek interviews more frequently than he has done with the soldier, as in our ports he is generally to be found in the fried fish shops?

Mr. HALDANE

The soldier has his preferences.
