HC Deb 04 April 1910 vol 16 c12
Mr. NEWMAN

asked the Postmaster-General, if he would state what standard of practical experience in manufacturing operations was required of the body of inspectors recently appointed by the Controller of Stores, and to whom the duty had been entrusted of reporting as to efficiency and conditions of labour prevailing in any firms that were desirous of being placed on the list of Government contractors to the General Post Office?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

No such body of inspectors has been appointed by the Controller of Stores. An officer of the Department inquires and reports with regard to the observance of the Fair Wages Clause by firms holding Post Office contracts. That officer is generally conversant with manufacturing systems and processes. If, however, in any given case he should require technical assistance, it is afforded to him.
