HC Deb 06 September 1909 vol 10 cc895-6
Sir G. PARKER (for Mr. Pike Pease)

asked what is the total estimated revenue for tobacco, Excise and Customs, for the current financial year, and what is the total amount of value on which the calculation is based?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

The revenue to be received during the current financial year from the Customs Duty on imported tobacco is estimated at £15,840,000. This estimate is not based on value, as the Tobacco Duty bears no fixed proportion to the value of the tobacco on which it is paid. It is not possible to estimate accurately the revenue to be derived from the Excise Duty on home-grown tobacco, as the industry is at present in an experimental stage, but the amount will be comparatively small.
