HC Deb 02 September 1909 vol 10 cc575-6
Mr. JOHN WARD

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether his attention has been called to an accident on the new dock works at Rosyth by which a lad's leg was fractured; whether he is aware that the lad was conveyed to Dunfermline Hospital; and will he state the distance from the works to the hospital and the kind of conveyance used on this occasion?

Mr. McKENNA

The accident referred to occurred on 24th August, and was duly reported by the contractors to the Admiralty Superintending Engineer. First aid was available on the spot, and the leg was put into splints. The lad was then conveyed to Dunfermline Hospital at the request of his father, who is also employed on the works. The distance from the works to the hospital is about 3½ miles; the journey was made in the contractor's motor car, the lad being accompanied by one of the sub-agents.

Mr. JOHN WARD

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether the doctor employed to attend the workmen at the new works, Rosyth, is also engaged in private practice; and what are the terms of his engagement, including salary?

Mr. McKENNA

The doctor engaged by the contractors to attend the workmen at the new works at Rosyth is engaged in private practice in lnverkeithing. The contractors have arranged that he shall attend all accidents on the works when required, also the men and their families in sickness at their own houses. The question of salary is one for the contractors.

Mr. J. WARD

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware whether the salary, whatever it is, is paid by the contractors or deducted from the wages of the workmen?

Mr. McKENNA

No, Sir, I am not aware.
