HC Deb 07 October 1909 vol 11 cc2176-7
Mr. DILLON

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the British Government have given any assurances to the Government of Spain with regard to more extended operations in Morocco; whether he has any reason to believe that the Spanish Government contemplates the occupation of Tetuan or any considerable portion of Moorish territory; and whether His Majesty's Government has been sounded by the Spanish Government in reference to such enterprises?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

The answer to all these questions is in the negative.

Mr. DILLON

Will the House be informed before any undertaking is given on the part of the British Government in favour of any further or more extensive proceedings in Morocco?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

I do not think that that question arises. We do not know of any intention on the part of the Spanish Government either contrary to treaty obligations or in any way affecting British interests.
