HC Deb 07 October 1909 vol 11 c2199
Mr. GEORGE ROBERTS

asked the Secretary of State for War if his attention has been directed to the case in which a man named Walter Lams was killed and a Mrs. Missor was wounded while travelling by train from Yarmouth to Norwich on 23rd August, in connection with which two Territorials of the F Company, 4th Battalion Norfolk Regiment, were arrested, the jury, however, at the inquest on the deceased person returning a verdict of accidental death; whether compensation will be granted in respect thereof; and, if so, can he state in what method and to what extent it will be made?

The SECRETARY of STATE for WAR (Mr. Haldane)

My attention was drawn to this case by the colleague of the hon. Member for Norwich some days ago. Investigation of the circumstances was at once set on foot, and the result has made it quite clear that the War Department was in no sense responsible for the accident. However, the question whether any ex gratia grant can be made is under consideration.
