HC Deb 05 October 1909 vol 11 cc1849-50
Mr. T. J. CONDON

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether he is aware that on the occasion of the arrival of two distinguished American citizens visiting Clonmel to-day to receive the freedom of the borough, for which occasion the town is being decorated, the police commanded Mr. Stephen M'Grath to haul down the United States flag which he had run up on his house in honour of the distinguished visitors, and when he refused to do so the police forcibly hauled down the flag and threatened Mr. M'Grath, a prominent citizen and a licensed publican; and what steps, if any, he will take to stop these insults to the American flag?

Mr. BIRRELL

I only received the question a moment ago and have had no means of obtaining any information as to this alleged occurrence at Clonmel, but I will ascertain what the facts are in regard to it.

Mr. CONDON

The facts are as I have stated.
