HC Deb 03 November 1909 vol 12 cc1820-1
Mr. GINNELL

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland if he will state the date upon which Mr. Bennett Goldney, of Canterbury, was appointed Athlone Pursuivant, and on whose recommendation, the date of the Lord Lieutenant's letter requiring Mr. Bennett Goldney to resign that office; the reason for that request; and the date of the last letter from Mr. Bennett Goldney asking to be reappointed?

Mr. BIRRELL

Mr. Bennett Goldney was appointed Athlone Pursuivant on 14th February, 1907, on the recommendation of Sir Arthur Vicars. He was asked to resign on 25th October, 1907, on the reconstitution of the Office of Arms. He wrote on 8th January, 1908, expressing a wish to withdraw his resignation, but his request was not complied with.

Mr. GINNELL

Does the right hon. Gentleman say that the reconstitution of the office was the sole reason for calling on him to resign?

Mr. BIRRELL

Yes, the desire in all the circumstances of the case that the office should be reconstituted from top to bottom.
