HC Deb 18 May 1909 vol 5 cc212-3
Mr. HARMOOD-BANNER

Has the attention of the Chancellor of the Ex- chequer been called to the amount of ungotten minerals belonging to the. Ecclesiastical Commissioners and the Commissioners of Woods and Forests, especially in Wales, and if the new tax on ungotten minerals will apply?

Mr. LLOYD-GEORGE

I am aware that considerable quantities of ungotten minerals are owned both by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and by the Crown. The new tax will be applicable to the former, but not, of course, to the latter.

Mr. HARMOOD-BANNER

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the Commissioners of Woods and Forests are the greatest holders of minerals, especially in Wales, of anybody in the United Kingdom, and that that body is under the control of the Government?

Mr. LLOYD-GEORGE

Yes, they represent the Crown, and to tax them would be taking money out of one pocket and putting it into the other.
