HC Deb 18 May 1909 vol 5 cc232-3
Mr. JOHN ROCHE

asked what progress has been made towards the reinstatement of the evicted tenants upon the Clanricarde estate under the Evicted Tenants Act of 1907 and the Amending Act of 1908; how many have been reinstated; how many are yet out of their homes; and when may they hope to obtain the benefits of those two Acts specially passed by this House to deal with such cases?

Mr. BIRRELL

The question of the compulsory acquisition of certain lands on Lord Clanricarde's estate under the Evicted Tenants Acts of 1907 and 1908 is still sub judice, as the Estates Commissioners are appealing against the recent decision of the King's Bench Division directing the issue of a writ prohibiting them from proceeding further in the matter. The Commissioners have provided 11 tenants, evicted from this estate, with farms on other estates; 20 have been put in occupation under temporary lettings of other lands acquired by the Commissioners, and 77 have been noted for consideration in the allotment of land.

Mr. JOHN DILLON

What is the ultimate Court of Appeal in this case?

Mr. BIRRELL

The Irish Court of Appeal.

Mr. DILLON

Finally?

Mr. BIRRELL

Finally, yes.

Mr. JOHN ROCHE

How many evicted tenants have been reinstated on the Clanricarde estate under any Act passed by this Parliament?

Mr. BIRRELL

I have not the figures in my head.

Mr. JOHN ROCHE

That is part of the question.

Mr. BIRRELL

Eleven tenants.

Mr. JOHN ROCHE

Am I to understand that 11 tenants have been reinstated on the Clanricarde estate?

Mr. BIRRELL

No; they have been provided with farms on other estates.

Mr. JOHN ROCHE

Have any at all been reinstated on the Clanricarde estate?
