HC Deb 17 May 1909 vol 5 c13
Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he could state whether any petrol had yet paid duty on arrival in England since the tax was imposed; and, if so, when and to what amount?

Mr. LLOYD-GEORGE

The only duty received on motor spirit up to the 15th instant was £1,200 collected at Barrow during last week.

The HON. MEMBER

also asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he had yet been able to form any estimate as to the amount of petrol used for propulsion in commercial vehicles; and, if so, what would be the amount of the tax thereon at the l½d. rate, bringing in £125,000.

Mr. LLOYD-GEORGE

I have no materials for making an exact calculation on this point, but the estimate of the probable yield of the tax in a full year was based on the assumption that approximately 20,000,000 gallons would pay duty at the l½d. rate, bringing in £125,000.
