HC Deb 17 May 1909 vol 5 c23
Mr. MENZIES

asked the Secretary to the Treasury the latest estimate of the amount of aggregate wealth and average income per head of the population in Great Britain, United States, Germany, and France respectively; the gross amount of taxation for 1908 per head in these countries, having regard in his calculations in each case to imperial and local, direct and indirect, taxation, and reckoning import duties in all cases as indirect taxation; and the proportion per head according to wealth and income?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Hobhouse)

I regret that the necessary material for answering this question is not available.

Mr. MENZIES

Cannot the hon. Gentleman give the figures in some form? Will he allow me to ask for a Return of the approximate figures

Mr. HOBHOUSE

I cannot give the accurate figures, and I cannot conceive that the approximate figures would be of any use.
