HC Deb 10 May 1909 vol 4 cc1422-3
Sir GILBERT PARKER

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies what would be the constitutional position of the Land Board of the Orange River Colony in the event of the administrative unification of South Africa; would it remain under the control of the Imperial Government for the term specified under the Orange River Colony constitution, or would its status and position in any way be altered by the granting of a constitution for unification?

The UNDER-SECRETARY for the COLONIES (Colonel Seely)

I gather that the Land Board would not be affected by the unification of South Africa, but the Secretary of State is in communication with Lord Selborne on the subject.

Sir GILBERT PARKER

May I ask the hon. Gentleman to state whether the Land Board will remain under the Imperial Government?

Colonel SEELY

That is the view I take of it at present, but I should inform the hon. Gentleman that the Secretary of State has issued a Memorandum to Lord Selborne asking his advice on that matter.

Sir GILBERT PARKER

Will the right hon. Gentleman furnish us with those views if he sees fit when they arrive?

Colonel SEELY

Yes. If the hon. Member will put down a question in a few days' time I think I will be able to give him a reply.
