HC Deb 04 May 1909 vol 4 cc900-1
Mr. JOHN MURPHY

asked whether Mr. Ryan, the inspector of the Estates Commissioners, drove on the same car the estate agent when visiting evicted tenants, and in one case recommended an evicted tenant to take a holding other than her own though her own was available; and whether such proceedings have the approval of the Commissioners?

Mr. BIRRELL

The Estates Commissioners inform me that on the occasion referred to the agent drove with their inspector, as it was desirable that a representative of the owner should be present at the inspection. The inspector did not recommend an evicted tenant to take a holding other than her own, but asked one person, who sought reinstatement as the representative of an evicted tenant, whether she would take a farm elsewhere. The Commissioners approve of their inspector's action in the matter.

Mr. MURPHY

If I assure the right hon. Gentleman that such an event as I describe happened in my presence, will he take steps to prevent such an event in future?

Mr. BIRRELL

The Estates Commissioners on this matter acted on their own authority. They say that they approve of their inspector's action in the matter.

Mr. JOHN MURPHY

asked if the Estates Commissioners intend to take any steps to secure untenanted land and to relieve congestion and evicted tenants in the parish of Barraduff, county Kerry, in accordance with the representations made to them by the Rev. Father Browne, parish priest, the Killarney District Council, and others representing the parish?

Mr. BIRRELL

My attention has been called to Father Browne's complaint. The Estates Commissioners inform me that the land referred to therein is tenanted, and that the land judge has decided that the tenant is entitled to purchase.
