HC Deb 03 May 1909 vol 4 c716
Mr. REES

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will consider the possibility of arranging, with reference to the proposed change in the United States tariff, that England should be treated as the country of origin of tea which arrives in England from British possessions and is thence forwarded to America, so that the preference of 1 percent, might apply to tea which reaches America viâ England as well as to such tea, if any, as arrives in America direct from India or Ceylon?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY of the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. H. J. Tennant)

The duty on tea proposed by the Tariff Bill when first introduced into the United States House of Representatives has, I understand, been reconsidered, and in the Bill as it left that House, and also as amended by the Finance Committee of the Senate, tea appears on the free list.
