HC Deb 03 May 1909 vol 4 c726
Mr. BOTTOM LEY

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he can say what would be the approximate yield of an ad valorem stamp of 1d. in the pound upon the nominal amount of stocks and shares represented by certificates in joint stock companies registered in the United Kingdom.

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. Lloyd-George)

The total paid-up share capital of registered companies on 30th April, 1908, was £2,123,000,000. A stamp duty of 1d. in the pound on this sum would amount to about £9,000,000.

Mr. BOTTOMLEY

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider the propriety of taking charge of that amount?
