HC Deb 03 May 1909 vol 4 cc741-2
Mr. BARNES

asked the Under-Secretary for the Colonies whether he had received a complaint from the trade unionists of Durban stating that the Government there are using soldiers to take the place of strikers on the Natal Railway, and whether he has communicated with the War Office and the Governor of Natal on the subject, and, if so, with what result?

Colonel SEELY

I telegraphed to the Governor last week, and I received the following reply this morning: "Two men have been employed on the Natal Government railways and railway works for some months past under arrangements made with the military authorities. I am not quite certain from the reports received whether one or both of these men were employed on April 27th. One soldier was employed on that date as a stoker on an emergency trip. I am satisfied that there has been no other employment of soldiers during the strike."
