HC Deb 04 March 1909 vol 1 c1567
Mr. LONSDALE

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland if he will lay upon the Table a précis of any reports made to him by the late Under-Secretary, Lord MacDonnell, relative to the lawlessness in certain districts and the effectiveness of the machinery of the ordinary law in dealing with the same?

Mr. BIRRELL

Did any such reports exist it would be clearly impossible and contrary to all sound precedent to produce them. As a matter of fact, communications made to me by Lord Macdonnell when Under-Secretary were made verbally in the course of frequent and friendly conversations.
