HC Deb 04 March 1909 vol 1 cc1583-4
Mr. JOHN PHILLIPS

asked the Vice-President of the Department of Agriculture (Ireland) why there are any restrictions on the importation of pigs from Ireland into England, as there is no swine fever in Ireland at present; and will he get such restrictions removed, if possible?

The ATTORNEY-GENERAL for IRELAND (Mr. Cherry)

who answered the question, said: The restrictions referred to have force under certain Swine Fever Orders made some time ago by the English Board of Agriculture and Fisheries. The question of the removal of such restrictions is one for the English Board of Agriculture, and I cannot undertake on behalf of the Irish Department to interfere with their discretion, but I regret to say that the position as regards swine fever in Ireland is less favourable than this question asumes, 158 outbreaks having been recorded in the country last year, and 4, so far, this year—the latest on 26th February.
