HC Deb 28 June 1909 vol 7 cc3-4
Sir SAMUEL SCOTT

asked the right hon. Gentleman whether any reserve of saddles for Yeomanry is now in store; if so, what are the numbers; and would they be sufficient to meet the demand on mobilisation?

Mr. HALDANE

A reserve of saddlery is not held specially for the Yeomanry. Sufficient saddlery exists to complete all Yeomanry units to their full establishment.

Sir SAMUEL SCOTT

Will the right hon. Gentleman state whether he has had any complaints respecting the quality of the saddlery issued this year to Yeomanry regiments?

Mr. HALDANE

No complaints have reached the War Office.

Sir SAMUEL SCOTT

I desire to ask the Secretary of State for War whether the difficulties this year in supplying Yeomanry regiments with saddles of sufficient size and girths of sufficient length were caused by the saddlery being provided for horses of an entirely different stamp to those usually employed by Yeomanry for their annual training; and, if so, whether he will see that in the future suitable saddlery will be provided?

Mr. HALDANE

The saddlery provided for issue to the Yeomanry this year is of the same pattern as that hitherto provided for Yeomanry units. Abnormal demands-have however arisen this year for large sized girths and larger sized saddles than those previously required by the Yeomanry. Some difficulty arose in dealing with these unexpected demands, but it is not anticipated that it will arise in future.
