HC Deb 28 June 1909 vol 7 c5
Colonel LONG

asked the Secretary of State for War by whose authority four Lifeguardsmen wearing His Majesty's uniform took part recently in carrying a canopy over the Host in an illegal outdoor procession at Highgate; and if he will take steps to prevent a repetition of this offence in the future?

Mr. HALDANE

The ceremony at St. Joseph's Retreat, Highgate, referred to, consisted of a service in the Church, and a procession through the private grounds of the Retreat which I am informed were not thrown open to the public. The General Officer Commanding London District had sanctioned the attendance of soldiers provided that they did not take part in the procession outside the precincts of the Church. No offence has been committed.
